Altdorf is the seat of the Emperor Karl
Franz, and as such is the current Imperial capital. The Imperial
court supports a flourishing economy and attracts all sorts of
people.
Altdorf stands on a series of islands amongst the mud flats at the point where the Reik and Talabec converge. Here the river is divided into three channels, which reunite at a harbour north of the city. This harbour is the Reiksport, home of the Imperial navy, and the farthest inland port for ocean-going ships.
Altdorf is a renowned center of
learning, with nobles from around the Old World coming to learn
with leading thinkers at the University of Altdorf. Altdorf also
houses the majestic wizards' towers of the Colleges of Magic,
where the finest Battle Wizards in the Old World are trained. The
Imperial Zoo houses large monsters and strange creatures from the
Northern Wastes. It also accomodates the Emperor's war monsters,
gathered by adventurers who are rewarded for their efforts.
The Imperial Engineers School is responsible for many of the Empire's technical innovations over the past centuries. It was founded by Leonardo of Miragliano, the inventor of the steam tank. Many of the engineers are dwarfs, renegades of the Dwarf Engineers Guild which dislikes innovation. The School provides the Imperial army with experimental weapons such as Repeater Hand Guns and the Helblaster Volley Gun.
Altdorf also houses many Dwarf smiths and merchants, whose ancestors settled there after their mountain homes were attacked.
