The
Realm of Chaos lies in a roughly circular territory around the
north pole. It is directly under the collapsed warp gate which
pours magic energy into the world. It is a land of unreality
where time and space have no meaning. It is inhabited by Chaos
gods and daemons who exist in the magic-saturated atmosphere. The
land around the Realm is a desert of stones and shifting sands.
These lands are called the Chaos Wastes. It is surrounded by the
wastelands called Troll Country.
The wastelands are inhabited by monstrous creatures that Chaos gets their armies strength from. When the tides of magic flow strongly the Chaos armies travel southwards. With their success the raw stuff of Chaos expands and threatens to overwhelm the north.
The furthest the Realm of Chaos has expanded since Sigmar was in the Great War Against Chaos which began in 2302. The power of Chaos had been growing for many years. Beastmen prowled the forests and because of the problems in the Empire there wasn't enough strength to get rid of them. Warriors of Chaos, human outcasts from the wars, gathered to join the Beastmen and other creatures of Chaos. The Realm of Chaos expanded quickly. In the winter of 2301 Chaos armies moved south. Chaos Sorcerers and worshippers emerged in the Empire to attack it from the inside. With winter the armies struck. Kilev in the north was quickly overcome, a large army being crushed near Praag. Chaos advanced and besieged Praag. By the next winter, Praag fell. Living bodies melted into the walls and Praag became a living nightmare.
Remains of the defeated Kislevite army fled southwards, warning of the oncoming of Chaos. Magnus, a noble of Nuln arose in theconfusion and panic as a leader. He marched northwards from city to city. At each town he would give rousing speeches and he gathered a great army. The Elector Counts recognised him as a leader and there armies joined his. At Middenheim the army was the largest force in the history of the Empire, and had to split into two to supply the food and accomodation.
The first army, consisting of Kislev and
mounted troops, hurried to Praag to relieve the siege. They were
too late and only managed to destroy the rearguard. The second
army, led by Magnus, marched to Kislev to reprovision before
marching northwards. Upon arrival they found the city already
under siege and attacked immediately. Kislev was being defended
by the remaining Kislevs and a large Dwarf army. The large Chaos
force, focussing on Kislev, was scattered by Magnus's army.
Magnus was forced back by the much larger Chaos army. Dwarfs
attempted to breakout of Kislev but were contained. As the Chaos
army regrouped, the army returning from Praag arrived in a fury
and attacked. Magnus and the defenders seized the opportunity and
the Chaos army was destroyed.
Magnus was elected Emperor in 2304 and restored order in the Empire. After Magnus, he crown went to Count Leopold of Stirland, and then to his grandson Dieter. During his reign, Marienburg ceded from the Empire for a large amount of gold. He was replaced by Wilhelm III, Prince of Altdorf and Elector Count of the Reikland. Since Wilhelm's accession in 2429, the crown has remained with the Princes of Altdorf until the present Emperor Karl Franz.
