The Empire is surrounded on three sides by mountain ranges, which not only provide a defensive barrier against invaders, but also house many dangerous enemies. A few passes remain open all year and many smaller roads can be easily used throughout summer. These passes must be guarded securely as they are vital to the security of the Empire.
The Grey Mountains mark the border between Brettonia and the Empire. There are a few Dwarf settlements in these mountains. The larger passes are guarded by Brettonian and Imperial fortresses. Most of them however, are much smaller and very dangerous, only allowing merchants to pass through. The largest pass lies south of Altdorf, called Axe Bite Pass. On the Imperial end it is guarded by the large fortress Helmgart. This is the favoured pass for invading armies. The north of the Grey Mountains decreases into a hilly region called Gisoreux Gap, the main route between Brettonia and the Empire.
The Worlds Edge
Mountains are large and impossible to cross. The mountain range
was once the domain of the Dwarfs, who mined it cut large cities
and fortresses into the underground rock, which were connected by
many tunnels. After the wars between Elves and Dwarfs much of the
work was destroyed by earthquakes and volcanoes, and lost to
Skaven and Night Goblins, except for some of the larger cities
which still house Dwarfs.
The Black Mountains lie to the South, separating the Empire from the Border princes. They are tall and the weather is unpredictable. The Black Fire Pass, where Sigmar fought the Orcs, is surrounded by sheer walls of rock and opens onto a valley. The range is riddled with treacherous tunnels occupied by goblins, trolls and skaven.
The Middle Mountains, lying in the north of the Empire, are used as a refuge by Chaos warbands, Beastmen, Orcs and Goblins. Occasionally Imperial forces try to clear out the enemies, but the area remains dangerous and avoided by humans.
