After the battle
of Black Fire of Pass, at which Sigmar helped prevent an Orc
invasion, the dwarf King Kurgan Ironbeard presented a gift of
magic to the men of the Empire to show his gratitude. He ordered
the great Runesmith Alaric the Mad to make twelve rune swords,
one for each of Sigmar's chieftains. Each blade was forged from a
solid nugget of the magic metal Gromril, worked under the light
of the full moon, fired by the dragon Snarkul the Red, and cooled
in daemon blood. Runes were carved on them, carvings which bind
magic into their works.
By the time the swords were complete all the original chieftains who had fought at Black Fire Pass were dead, and Sigmar had departed to the east. The Runefangs were presented to the ruling Emperor who divided them among the Elector Counts. The Runefangs still serve the counts of the Empire. Because there are only ten counts, the Solland and Drakwald swords are held in the Imperial armoury. They are safely guarded, but occasionally used by great heroes or wizards.
During the destruction of Solland by Gorbad Ironclaw, the Solland Sword was lost. It was later recovered in a forgotten lair, by an expedition of dwarfs and men.
